As designers we have a responsibility to present owners with more sustainable options and to encourage them to adopt hem. Because sustainability can’t be like some sort of a moral sacrifice or a political dilemma or a philanthropical cause. It has to be treated as a design challenge. Vripack is taking this challenge heads on: we love to create vessels that look beautiful, perform flawlessly and leave minimum or even no ecological impact.
But intrinsic to this is a studio-wide spotlight on sustainability. The need for a more environmentally conscious world has arrived. The moment has come to alter how we live. The first creation is done by us and it should incorporate available and new sustainability solutions, like bio based batteries, kite power wind energy and locally harvested woods and textiles for the interiors. It’s there for the taking, ripe for development. And let’s not forget the obvious solutions here: by underpinning design with state of the art naval architecture. Yachts can massively reduce their fuel burn rates where that fuel can be bio based as well in stead of fossil.
Vripack must creatively lead and include these solutions in the first creation of our yachts. By doing this we have the opportunity to influence the second creation of the yacht, the building of her, to be ultimately more sustainable and ripple by ripple create a new wave of sustainable yachts.
The one designer we all look to for inspiration is Mother Nature. Her most important lesson is that great design takes time. Sustainability, lower impact, cradle 2 cradle and inclusive design mark such a fundamental shift, and today this shift has happened: A new wave is coming.
